HARRIS

The word knows where it is.

HBA

The word is mid-breath.

VAPOR

The word is letting go.

01 ∴ THE FIELD

Calculus is the mathematics of things that change.

You are standing in a room. The temperature is changing. You feel it before you can name it. Calculus is the mathematics that measures what you are already feeling — the rate of change at every single moment.

02 ∴ THE INSTRUMENT

Every font you have ever used was designed to stay still. This one was designed to move — and to remember every position it has moved through.

Harris holds. HBA breathes. Vapor transmits. The Stability Axis reads the state the word is in right now. Every word carries the record of every state it has passed through.

03 ∴ THE PROOF

The four photo essays below were made using the same logic as the font.

Each photograph is a word in one of the four states. Together, they make the same argument the font makes — about what it means for something to hold, breathe, and release. An Æssay is a photographic sequence with a structural argument. Six plates. One arc.

SONNET ENGINE ∴ THE INFRASTRUCTURE

The mathematics were always there.
Frozen inside the practice.

Picture a woman standing before a freshly plastered wall. The mud is still wet. Her forearm is the only instrument. Using only the sweep of her arm and the pressure of her finger, she carves interlocking curves directly into the damp earth — curves that contain the same symmetry properties that European mathematicians would later write down in textbooks and call geometry.

The Mozambican mathematician Paulus Gerdes spent his career documenting this. He called it frozen mathematics — intelligence that is not written in academic equations, but locked inside human practice and physical creation. The intelligence came first. The formalization came second. The physical action is the algorithm.

STEAM SANS is the typographic form of that same impulse. Harris is the word that holds its form. HBA is the word in motion between states. Vapor is the word at the moment of transmission. The Stability Axis measures which state the word is in right now. The Sonnet Engine is the system that reads the arc.

SONNET ENGINE ∴ EQ INSTRUMENT

The instrument is reading you.

Set the four vectors to your current position. The word responds. The sound responds. The dials are about you.

SONNET ENGINE ∴ STEEPING NOTE

Sit with the four sliders. Move them to where you actually are.
